A group of 12-16 year olds from the Prazeres Favela have just won 2nd prize in the European Student Film Festival!
The Prazeres Favela is th neighbouring Favela to Julio Otoni and the project is run by Charles Siquiera who is also the Project Co-ordinator for The Julio Otoni Project. The group of young people put together the short film in less than a week after hearing about the competition and none of them have any formal training in film or cinema production, just the knowledge they have developed themsleves through trial and error. Charles, who is a trained actor was the only person involved with any professional training in the area and they used local residents as the actors. Despite having less than a week to put together the film their inspiring story of a single mother from the Favela who loses her son as a result of an accident when he is flying his kite off one of the precarious rooftops of the Favela impressed the judges so much that they were awarded second place.

One of the highlights for the children at the Julio Project recently was that the children got to visit the famous Rio landmark - the Christ the Redeemer statue. They also got to ride the cog-train up to the statue, which as you can imagine as nearly as big an event for them as visiting the statue itself. One of the reasons why this trip was so special was that despite living in Rio almost at the foot of the Christ statue, the majority of these children will have never had the opportunity to visit a local landmark that is symbolic of their city. The Julio Otoni–Project makes some music!
Jinga provides funding for The Julio-Otoni Project in Rio. The project has nearly doubled in size and has 70 children attending it’s classes.
The kids have just had their first ever music lesson in which they learn the song Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes before getting into groups to put their own interpretations on this song.
This is so important for these kids as something so basic to us is not taught to them either at school or at home. It’s also a rare opportunity for them to be in situation where they have to organise themselves, be creative and then stand up in front of their peers and perform. This is a huge step forward for these kids.
